Best Martial Arts Films: Blood and Bone Review VIDEO

"Blood and Bone"... this is my new FAVORITE Martial Arts Film. OMG. I had thought it was all about Gina Carano... but Michael Jai White just blew me away. Who is this guy? Where has he been all my life? The flying punch with a scissor-kick, c'mon.

This was the best opening scene in a martial arts movie that I'd ever seen. The fight choreography, the skill... perfect form, perfect execution. As a practiced martial artist, myself, it was just gorgeous to watch. Nothing fake here.

Be prepared (spoiler):
They "tap out" but the guy breaks their arm anyway!

I can't believe it took me so  long to see this thing. WOW. I watched it. I watched 'The Special Features'. I watched it with commentary and then I watched it again.

Netflix isn't enough. I need to OWN this one.

This is real martial arts for real martial artists. In fact, the script was written by a 20 year veteran of the martial arts (an "Old Schooler" like me). Plus, the star, Michael Jai White, actually holds 7 Black Belts! Are you kidding me?! (I only hold 3.)

I am in awe. The choreography, the skill, the fricken ART of it all.

If you get the DVD, be sure to watch the Special Features and the movie, again, with Commentary. It will give you more insight into the 'Making of'... and incline you to give respect where respect is due.

Movie Reviews: "The Last AirBender" Fantasy Martial Arts

Who likes Fantasy? I have to say it's 3rd on my list, behind Sci Fi and Horror but... it's still fun. Who can say what is beyond that wall at the end of the Universe? What was once thought insane (inane?) fantasy is now our science... flying, visiting other planets, even television. Let alone communicating instantly with someone on the other side of the world. Wow. Makes you think ANYTHING is possible.

Just to keep my sanity, I like to say, "All GOOD things are possible."

This is a fun little flick. There is an interesting element of martial arts within all the "magic". Reminds me of Tai Chi. I don't have a lot of experience with Tai Chi but I consider it (as many do), not only one of the most lethal and practical martial arts, but also the most difficult to master... it takes a great deal of patience. Something most us possess little of.

It also looks like Kung Fu to me. But that is one style I have never practiced, let alone mastered.

Please, tell us what YOU see.

Martial Arts Movie Reviews: The Hammer w Adam Corolla

US Navy 030327-N-9693M-002 Lt. Cmdr. Philip Cr...Image via Wikipedia
My New Favorite Martial Arts Film is "The Hammer" with Adam Corolla.

It's serious. It's funny. It's fun!

Adam Corolla, of The Man Show, is absolutely outstanding as a serious actor. Surprise, surprise. But the script (probably Adam's interpretation of it) is light enough that you'll want to see this film again.

It's a boxing flick with the usual 'aging contender gets a second chance' theme. But there are enough twists to keep it interesting and amusing.

As an added bonus, I learned a new Speed Bag routine. Watch for it.

"The Hammer" comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Note: If you haven't figured it out yet, I don't review the big Hollywood IT NOW films. For me it's all about the ones you've probably never heard of - the offbeat but worthy. The ones you'd miss if I didn't tell you about 'em.

AND, if it sucks, I won't even waste your time with a review. Thanks for listening.

I saw this film on Netflix Instant Play.

Martial Arts Movie Reviews: "Champion" a Korean Boxing Film

Bruce LeeImage via Wikipedia
First of all, let me just say that I have this thing for Asian men (don't tell my husband). It all started with Bruce Lee in Return of the Dragon when I was 13 years old. It's what inspired me to start training in martial arts.

The leading actor in this film, playing Deuk-gu Kim (World Lightweight Boxing Champ of Korea), reminds me of Bruce Lee (he's gorgeous and talented both).

Well, enough of that. It also delights me, now, that we are an international culture and I get to see how others have lived their lives in foreign countries, the cultural differences (like beaten for losing AND beaten for winning? - you'll see what I mean. I think this movie is a treasure.

It's the usual "from rags to riches" story. But this time it's about a Korean boxer. Frankly, in my ignorance I thought boxing was just an American thing. Not so. Korea doesn't just produce Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido champions. No. It gives us World Champion Boxers (and, as I recall, some phenomenal Olympic athletes as well).

And I love this boxer's style: He doesn't give them time to think. It's just flurry, flurry, flurry.

Favorite Line:
"The winning team will get 20 roasted chicken!"

Favorite Scene:
The drunken exchange.

And The SONG.

I didn't fully read the intro, so I was a bit shocked by the ending. I recommend letting yourself be surprised too.

Sub-titled but worth it.

P.S. As a Karate-ka, I was never that crazy about boxing. It just seemed illogical to not use your legs too. And what about blocking? It is clearly more about taking a punch than blocking one.

Still, you have to admire the sport and those who are bold and brave enough to practice it... the same holds true for MMA competitors. Props.

GIRL FIGHTERS "Muay Thai Giant" MARTIAL ARTS Movie Reviews

Here's a fun little GIRL FIGHT martial arts film I found. It's called "Muay Thai Giant". The girl fighters in it are awesome. They're miniature little Thai fighters and it takes place in Thailand.

Nathan Jones is great as, Barney Emerald, the "Gentle Giant". I've actually known a few of those in the Martial Arts world. Thank goodness not all males are Alpha types.

And Dan Chupong, the Police Chief, reminds me of Tony Jaa in "Ong Bak".

In addition to all that, it's so delightful to break the tradition of martial arts movie equals drug smugglers, thieves, and gangsters... oops. I lied. But at least the girls with the gentle (Aussie?) giant make it CUTE enough to qualify as FAMILY FUN.

Okay, it gets a little silly. But haven't we all felt that way with a little too much wasabi?

There's even a male vs. female Muay Thai match. How could you miss that?! You gotta love the "flying" elbows, upper-cuts, and knees of Muay Thai... but where are the blocks? Oh, yeah, I did see some inside the thigh knee blocks! Nice.

And then there's the Papaya Girl. Mmm.There's nothing better than TOUGH and SEXY!

SPOILER: Inside the ring she beats him but they call it a draw (being a male-dominated culture and all). That's one of the things we, as women, have to face in this patriarchal world culture. I once took down an 8th Degree Black Belt as a 6th Degree myself... did I get the same respect a man would have? No. Instead of saying, "Good job!", he said... "Here's what you did wrong."

Sub-titled. But well worth it.

Movie Reviews: Punch (When Girls Fight) Martial Arts Boxing

Punch to the FaceImage by Ninja M. via Flickr
Cat Fight?
Warning: This film does contain some female nu---y. But nothing really lude... that is if you don't mind seeing it in the ring. Hmm. Maybe it is a little... Anyway, I liked it.

Thought it was clever and fun. And the women were such strong female leads that you don't feel that they are being exploited in any way.

The acting was superb and it wasn't quite as "B" as I had expected. Might have taken itself a little too seriously, though.

Still, I recommend it if you like tough girls and fight scenes (and a little family drama). I think that if it were redone as a comedy it could be quite memorable. As it is, it's just IE for me.

Martial Arts: Do you Smell?! Odor Elimination for your GEAR: Karate Kickboxing MMA Jiu Jitsu Kung Fu Tae Kwon Do

Mixed martial artsImage via Wikipedia
Whether you just do cardio kickboxing for fitness or are into a contact martial art like karate, Muay Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) it doesn't matter.

Eventually the sweat adds up - if you're doing a good job working one up! So you will have to contend (not just with your sparring partner) but also with gear's odor.

A girl came up to me after one of our kickboxing classes one day and said, "Geez, my wraps are starting to smell. I guess I need to buy a new pair." Are you kidding me? Hello-o! I didn't say anything (I just smiled) but I was thinking, 'C'mon, woman, just wash the damn things!'

Does your gear smell? Are you the odorous ogre in your martial arts class? Here are a few tips for cleaning your gear (instead of spending your hard-earned on buying more!): hand wraps, (non-leather) gloves, protective gear, headbands, etc.

First of all, at the end of your class, don't just stuff all your "wet" gear into your bag and leave it there until your next class. That is the worst thing you can do. Once you're in your car, lay it out so that it can air out.You might even want to run your fingers along each side of your hand wraps and fold them nicely to get the wrinkles out.

Another trick is to buy these little balls that you can find in the laundry section of your grocer, for sneaker odor control, and put them inside your gloves between classes (besides airing them out).

But, at least once a month (once a week for the ambitious), soak your gear in a bucket or sink with a little (a very little or you'll have too many suds) Dawn Dish washing Soap. They now make one specifically for ODOR CONTROL. Soak your gear for about 45 minutes to an hour and then rinse and squeeze until you've removed all the detergent and gotten them as dry as you can by hand.

Now you will want to hang them out to dry. A little sun in the summertime won't hurt them. You can even leave them out overnight. Just be sure you're giving yourself enough time between classes, so that you will have dry gear for your next event. Do NOT use bleach or put the gear into a dryer. Air drying is best. Hanging them over a heating vent in the winter might also work.

And for when you forget (and you will), there's always the Travel Sized Lysol Spray or any regular type deodorant spray you can keep in your gym bag... just in case.

For your LEATHER gear, a different approach is necessary. You do NOT want to SOAK them. Here are some more detailed instructions:
