Dark Shadows Movie Review Remake of the 1966/1991 TV Series

Detail from Dark Shadows newspaper comic strip...Image via WikipediaI've had the time of my life this week skimming right through the 12 Episodes of the 1991 version of The Dark Shadows series on Hulu. I had watched the original series from 1966, in black and white, and was delighted with this version. But was quite disappointed when it abruptly ended at episode 13, knowing that the original went on for over two thousand episodes!

Well, in searching for full Episode 13, lo and behold, I discover that this summer Johnny Depp will be playing Barnabas Collins (the resident vampire) in yet another remake... full of this era's Super-stars-that-are-and-are-to-be.

It has everything you could possibly want in a "Gothic" Soap: vampires, witches, zombies, time-travel, star-crossed lovers, a psychic medium, possession, the estate overlooking the sea (in constant Maine mist). I just loved it. I can't imagine how a singular movie could do it justice. And Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins? I don't know. I just don't know.

Movie Review: "Tetsuo: The Bullet Man"

66ème Festival du Cinéma de Venise (Mostra), 4...Image via WikipediaI've never considered myself big on "Artsy" films, but wow. This film begins in black and white with minor colorations here and there. Just gorgeous... and this definitely adds to the intensity from the opening scene.

Definition: Tetsuo - Iron Man; Fast like a Ninja.

No subtitles (thank goodness) but definitely foreign in nature. Asian. Apparently this is the third in the series, but new to me.

The graphics? I loved 'em. Reminded me of 80's Pop Video. Not something you would expect in a film. Creative and entertaining.

The plot? Mind-bending.

Been looking to find the nationality of Eric Bossick (the star of this film) but had no luck. As some of you well know, I have this thing for (especially 1/2 Asian and 1/2 American men). Eric looks to fit the bill but I can't confirm it. Let me know what you find out.

It all started with my month in Japan (to study Karate), at seventeen, when I became enamored of the 1/2 and 1/2 actor Masao Kusakari (he was in a Japanese version of the TV series Starsky and Hutch).

ANYWAY, this film is a fricken carnival coaster ride. Are they still showing that film in 7th grade about the hallucinogenic powers of marijuana (the "portal drug")? It reminded me of that.

Movie Reviews: "Hardware, 1990" with a young Dylan McDermott

A portrait of Dylan McDermott.Image via WikipediaSo I've been watching the movie "Hardware, 1990" with the gorgeous Dylan Mcdermott,  and I began wondering about the efficacy of a real machine takeover.

So I turned to Kurzweil's "Transcendant Man" and I had a panic attack... 'It's not a question of IF this WILL HAPPEN, but WHEN!" Geez.

So I asked (the brain) the internet, a question, "Will robots overtake humanity?" and it led me to this site:

(http://www.suniljoseph.net/2011/03/13/why-machines-will-overtake-humans/):

My favorite line on this site is: "Disclaimer: The views expressed here are that of the author and is based on the limited knowledge and unlimited imagination of the author and should not be considered as a rational argument based on scientific facts."

So, apparently, there are two options here: the optimistic (humans will evolve right along with) and the pessimistic (robots will find us redundant enough - or dangerous enough to require extermination... or slavery). So which will it be?

A friend of mine once said, "Just choose your side and that's where you will end up." Sounds good enough to me. I'm an optimist by will, not nature. Takes a little work. But I think it will be worth the effort. Where do you stand?

Movie Reviews: "The Last AirBender" Fantasy Martial Arts

Who likes Fantasy? I have to say it's 3rd on my list, behind Sci Fi and Horror but... it's still fun. Who can say what is beyond that wall at the end of the Universe? What was once thought insane (inane?) fantasy is now our science... flying, visiting other planets, even television. Let alone communicating instantly with someone on the other side of the world. Wow. Makes you think ANYTHING is possible.

Just to keep my sanity, I like to say, "All GOOD things are possible."

This is a fun little flick. There is an interesting element of martial arts within all the "magic". Reminds me of Tai Chi. I don't have a lot of experience with Tai Chi but I consider it (as many do), not only one of the most lethal and practical martial arts, but also the most difficult to master... it takes a great deal of patience. Something most us possess little of.

It also looks like Kung Fu to me. But that is one style I have never practiced, let alone mastered.

Please, tell us what YOU see.
