Horror Movie Reviews: Wes Craven's "Dracula 2000"

Nathan Fillion & Adam BaldwinImage via Wikipedia
Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin
Okay, so I lucked upon "Wes Craven's Dracula II: The Ascension". And, of course I had to go back and see Wes Craven's Dracula I: "Dracula 2000".

What's so fun about this one is that it has "Castle" (Nathan Fillion) before his big TV break. But, if you ask me, he was most awesome in the Sci-Fi Series: Firefly and the movie Serenity.

Let me first say that my claim to fame here, is that the brother of Adam Baldwin was a good friend of my husband's way back when (in college)... when his brother, Adam, was still a struggling actor. Adam Baldwin is, of course, now a key character in the TV series "Chuck". He was also in "Serenity" with Nathan Fillion (Mr. Charisma extraordinaire).

Anyway, I really really liked this one. But I was happy I saw V-II first.

P.S. OMG!! I was halfway through this film before I realized that the tall, lean, and sexy Dracula was actually Gerard Butler!I

I actually love Gerard (esp. in "300"), but geez, his cheeks have puffed out a bit since this film, neh (Japanese for 'Don't you think so?').

Horror Movie Reviews: Dracula II: The Ascension

Jason Scott LeeJason Scott Lee (Image via RottenTomatoes.com)I thought I was so OVER vampire movies. Since 1983 and The Hunger, I'd pretty much seen 'em all. But... this one (suggested by Netflix) blew me away... a whole new twist. Very unexpected. I must say I enjoyed it a great deal.

The best part is that the NEW Van Helsing (aka Vampire Hunter) is a Church sanctioned Jason Scott Lee: most famous for his part as Bruce Lee in "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story".

He is (as always) extraordinary in his acts of dispension (ie. ridding the world of the vampire menace). SPOILER: He decapitates with an unusual blade... and a few extraordinary powers of his own.

I mentioned once before that I have this thing for Asian men (ever since my summer studying karate in Japan and discovering Masao Kusakari... a half American, half Asian actor). LOL. He was the star of a Japanese version of Starsky and Hutch (circa 1977). Whateverthehelll happened to that poster?

Martial Arts Movie Reviews: The Warrior's Way, 2009 (The Best Martial Arts Movies)

At first I was thinking, okay, "Cowboys and Aliens" so... now we have "Cowboys and Samarai". But then I remembered David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine in the 1970's TV series: Kung Fu.

This movie brings back a bit more of the beloved essence of that series... not so much the martial arts, but the WISDOM of the martial arts.

Somewhere I have a (cassette!) tape of the Kung Fu aphorisms from the series (Kung Fu, 1972-1975).

Sad note. Apparently the series was actually Bruce Lee's idea but he was cut from acting the part because America just wasn't ready for an Asian TV Star at the time (so said the production company).

Anyway, I just loved this film!!! And do highly recommend it for so many more reasons other than just the Eastern "wisdom".

The aesthetically beautiful and extremely creative cinematography is outstanding. And the stylized modern synthesis of script and acting are amazing to behold. A Masterpiece of direction by Sngmoo Lee. A real work of art... not to be missed.

The title: The Warrior's Way is nothing new to the martial arts world. But this movie is: serious, artistically brutal, and humorous all at once. I especially liked that the main character's protege is a young woman.

Again, as I said, I just loved it. Long live "The Eastern Western"!

Oh, yeah, the main actor?  Dong-gun Jang. He's Asia's answer to Clint Eastwood... soft-spoken, hard-assed, and as COOL as it gets.

Movie Reviews: "Hardware, 1990" with a young Dylan McDermott

A portrait of Dylan McDermott.Image via WikipediaSo I've been watching the movie "Hardware, 1990" with the gorgeous Dylan Mcdermott,  and I began wondering about the efficacy of a real machine takeover.

So I turned to Kurzweil's "Transcendant Man" and I had a panic attack... 'It's not a question of IF this WILL HAPPEN, but WHEN!" Geez.

So I asked (the brain) the internet, a question, "Will robots overtake humanity?" and it led me to this site:

(http://www.suniljoseph.net/2011/03/13/why-machines-will-overtake-humans/):

My favorite line on this site is: "Disclaimer: The views expressed here are that of the author and is based on the limited knowledge and unlimited imagination of the author and should not be considered as a rational argument based on scientific facts."

So, apparently, there are two options here: the optimistic (humans will evolve right along with) and the pessimistic (robots will find us redundant enough - or dangerous enough to require extermination... or slavery). So which will it be?

A friend of mine once said, "Just choose your side and that's where you will end up." Sounds good enough to me. I'm an optimist by will, not nature. Takes a little work. But I think it will be worth the effort. Where do you stand?

Movie Reviews: Jackie Chan in "Drunken Master" Best Martial Arts Films

Drunken Master DVD coverImage via WikipediaHere's a line I'd LIKE to hear: (from Jackie Chan's first Masterpiece "Drunken Master")...

"Wow, the old bitch is tough!"

This is, apparently, the film that started his comedic martial arts career. I was delighted to see that an "Old Woman" could kick his ass with kung fu (all-be-it choreographed). Check it out. As far as I'm concerned, this scene makes the movie.

The nice thing about martial arts (compared to most other sports) is that, if you remain active, you too will be able run circles around the 20 somethings when you're in your 50's. Believe me, it feels great... to have MORE energy, flexibility, and skill now... than I did at 20.

"And So It Is" The Kardashians vs Pretty Wild

Kim KardashianImage by BiggerPictureImages.com via Flickr
Kim Kardashian
I like "Pretty Wild" better. OMG! It's the Copy Cat but it's better. WTF. By the same network? In any case, the girls are hotter AND more "down to earth" (believe it or not).

Check it out. I found it on Netflix Instant Play (with whom I did NOT qualify for a kickback).
